This Art is from the Gothic Art and Architecture in 1140-1500 CE. I really don't like this piece. I don't like how sad it looks. It shows grief, pity, horror, and shock. I don't really like the picture because Jesus looks weak and that he has anorexia. Jesus looks like he is way to skinny and Mary looking like the old women (witch) in Snow White. The one thing I love about this piece is the love. The love that Virgin Mary has for her child and the how she is holding her innocent and loving boy Jesus in her arms. When we looked over this piece in class on 11/22 I couldn't really look at it. I don't want to think Jesus looked like that in his mothers arms when he was taken off the cross dead after being tortured. I looked up different pieces of art that makes this piece look better to see how she felt and to make him look more human then skinny and not well. I would hate to be a mother holding my child in my arms after they are dead. That would be comfort to them, but I would hate to not have my child alive.

Here are some other pictures that I liked instead of this one.
I like this one because Mary doesn't look old and Jesus looks more better. He is a normal size and he looks more himself. It is more beautiful.
I also like this one : )
I like this one because you can see the love for her son on her face and the emotion she is feeling.
My favorite piece in the world is Pieta by Michelangelo. Look at that one. You will find it very moving, fully engaged in grief yet much more beautiful to look upon.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very sad piece. The only thing I suppose that the artist meant it to feel miserable, and he definitely did a good job with that. It looks too unrealistic though. Mary looks like an evil witch, and if you didn't see the head or appendages, you'd think she's holding some sort of staff or stick.
ReplyDeleteI think that's what the artist was really trying to convey. Just saying to the viewer that death isn't glorified. I think it's crazy the piece kind of looks like it'd be something out of a Tim Burton movie. Like if Tim Burton ever did a movie based on Jesus haha.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Edward, the artist was just trying to show death is not pretty. The piece is very moving. It makes you think of the pain and suffering he and his mother went through.
